Sustainable Seafood Symposium

Seafood is an important food and economic source for hundreds of millions of people around the world. Our regional fisheries are crucial for supporting coastal, livelihoods, food security and global export trade in countries that have some of the fastest-developing economies in the world.

Our marine resources continue to decline. With more than 30% of global fisheries being overfished, illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing exacerbates the effect of overexploitation. The demand for seafood can hardly be met unless fisheries management is significantly improved. Hong Kong and many regional countries or territories lag behind other developed economies, notably the EU, the US, and Japan in terms of seafood import controls, despite being one of the largest global importers of seafood by value. Overcoming these challenges requires collaborative work among governments, the seafood industry and non-governmental organizations, such as the Hong Kong Sustainable Seafood Coalition (HKSSC).

Co-organized with ADM Capital Foundation, the 3rd Hong Kong Sustainable Seafood Symposium “Safeguarding Seafood for Future Generations – Time to Catch Up!” gathered over 16 experts and industry stakeholders to share invaluable insights and a wealth of knowledge into the sustainable seafood trade, policies and targets for governments and companies in Hong Kong, Macau and Asia Pacific.

The key notes of the symposium are summarized in the below report, including:

  • Updates on global and regional progress in seafood sustainability;
  • Strategies in setting corporate policies and targets, and experience dealing with problematic seafood species;
  • Important notes from the workshop on policy and targets in Hong Kong and Macau contexts and where we could improve.

The Symposium would not have been possible without the support of partners and sponsors, in particular the Swire Group Charitable Trust and JBC Foods Limited for funding the event, and to Cathay Pacific for flying in our international speaker from Japan and offsetting the associated emissions. We would also like to acknowledge the sponsorship of Blueprint in providing the venue.
